ARTHUR ERICKSON HOUSE AND GARDEN

Experience

A LEGENDARY ARCHITECT, A LEGENDARY RESIDENCE

As the Vancouver locus of the creativity of world-renowned architect Arthur Erickson from 1957 to 2009, the heritage value associated with his personal residence is international in scope. Erickson has been described as Canada’s greatest architect; his house and garden both embody and reflect his architectural sensibilities and were an inspiration to some of his greatest work.

Integral to, and equally inhabited as the house, was Arthur Erickson’s garden, one of the first truly West Coast gardens of the modern era. The Arthur Erickson Foundation requested that Neill F. Cumberbirch Architect and Luxton undertake a Conservation Plan for the preservation and restoration of this culturally significant house and garden. The Conservation Plan was a major undertaking, and provides a comprehensive historic context, which documents the evolution of the house and garden during Arthur Erickson’s residency, as well as recommendations for the preservation of the house and restoration of the famous garden.
