B.C. BINNING HOUSE

Experience

a plan to preserve an iconic canadian residence

The Binning House is a one-storey house located on a sloping lot on a quiet residential street in West Vancouver. The house is set amongst mature landscaping and overlooks Burrard Inlet and Vancouver. Designed in 1939 (and completed in 1941) by owner and artist B.C. Binning, the house is a very early example of the Modern architectural movement in Canada. Binning’s progressive views, eclectic mix of training and mentors, and the time he spent in Europe during the 1930s helped him create a residence that features a spectacular mix of art and architecture, among the first of its kind in Canada.

Luxton undertook the preparation of a Conservation Plan for the Binning House. The purpose of the Plan was to provide a comprehensive background of the Binning House site, including its history, heritage value, vision, condition review and necessary conservation interventions. The report outlined the general conservation approach that was determined to be most appropriate for the long-term maintenance and operation of the site. The Conservation Plan will be used to guide the future planning and physical work that is to be executed at the site, to ensure that the heritage value of the Binning House National Historic Site is preserved in perpetuity.
