RESTORING AN ART DECO ICON

The Hollywood Theatre is one of the last surviving neighbourhood cinemas in Vancouver and is a superior example of the Art Deco style, dating to 1935. The project involved the conservation and adaptive re-use of the venerable institution. Through an innovative Heritage Revitalization Agreement, a density bonus, and a density transfer to the adjacent site, an obsolete single-screen neighbourhood theatre was transformed into a multipurpose performance venue. The Theatre continues to be a beloved cultural focus of its surrounding community and a place of gathering for all citizens of Vancouver.

The original film venue use was respected (the original projector and film reels remain) through a thoughtful rehabilitation that allows for theatre and performance use. The Hollywood has been upgraded to include accessible washrooms and seating areas, while a robust Community Use Agreement allows for free Not-For-Profit and grassroots community group access.
